Summary

From award-winning illustrator Chris haughton, one of the most exciting new voices in children's literature, comes a brand new picture book about a beautiful bird, an unquenchable desire and plans gone awry。。。Four friends, three big and one little, are out for a walk。 Suddenly, they spot it - a beautiful bird perched high in a tree! They simply MUST have it and - SHH! - they have a PLAN。 So they tip-toe, tip-toe very slowly, nets poised - "Ready one。。。ready two。。。ready three。。。GO!" But, at the turn of the page, we find a ridiculous bunch of very tangled characters and a blissfully oblivious bird, flying away。

My grandsons (5 and 3) had me read this multiple times to them! We all loved it!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This fun and visually entertaining book will be sure to catch the attention of your young elementary students。 Three of the characters are hunters trying to catch a bird while a fourth character is friendly to the hunted bird and loudly yells, "Hello, Birdie!"。 The three hunters sneak up on the bird, but fail to capture it。 Each time the hunters see the bird, they think they have a plan to capture it but the bird (a beautiful rendition of a cardinal) escapes being captured。 Each time the fourth This fun and visually entertaining book will be sure to catch the attention of your young elementary students。 Three of the characters are hunters trying to catch a bird while a fourth character is friendly to the hunted bird and loudly yells, "Hello, Birdie!"。 The three hunters sneak up on the bird, but fail to capture it。 Each time the hunters see the bird, they think they have a plan to capture it but the bird (a beautiful rendition of a cardinal) escapes being captured。 Each time the fourth character yells, "Hello, Birdie!" Though we don't know if he is doing this purposefully so the bird can escape, it's clear that it isn't the reason the bird escapes。 The bird escapes because the hunters' plan is flawed。 After three (or four) failed attempts, the fourth character attempts to get the attention of the bird by feeding it bread。 The more bread crumbs the fourth character throws; the more birds are attracted to them。 The three hunters see this and hatch a new plan to capture some of the birds that have shown up。 Readying their nets they are close to capturing some birds but soon are confronted by a big bird, a big, angry bird。 They run away taking the fourth character with them。 They soon come to see a red squirrel and begin hatching a plan to capture it。 Note: None of these characters have names。 The blue nighttime background of the story is stunning and mysterious。 。。。more

One of our favourites, a really lovely way of building and releasing suspense within the story with the use of repetition

Linda

Read it out loud。 Very very quiet 。。。。

Funny picture book about a group of people who are trying to catch a bird。 Throughout the book they come up with a variety of ideas to try and catch the bird always using the catchphrase “Shhh, we have a plan!” as the bird repeatedly manages to escape。

Fun and clever。 This one will make for a great read-aloud, and it will crack the kids up。

Perfect! Repetitive, simple story with tons of sound effects for kids and their enthusiastic readers。 Darker illustrations make the story feel contemporary。 A little “catch more flies with honey” lesson that is nicely done。

Wonderful story about learning to really pay attention to what is happening instead of falling into the trap of habits and prejudice。

Four friends are on a walk through the woods when they decide to try and catch a bird。 The littlest friend always wants to say hi to the bird, but the other three keep telling him "Shh, we have a plan" as they try to catch the bird。A simply-illustrated, funny book about how plans can sometimes backfire。 It also includes a good lesson about the impact that being nice can have。 Four friends are on a walk through the woods when they decide to try and catch a bird。 The littlest friend always wants to say hi to the bird, but the other three keep telling him "Shh, we have a plan" as they try to catch the bird。A simply-illustrated, funny book about how plans can sometimes backfire。 It also includes a good lesson about the impact that being nice can have。 。。。more

Personally, I liked this book because Chris utilises many shades of blue to portray the nocturnal wonderings of the bird hunters。 This book would be good to explore with children in reception because of the bright pictures and because the text is short and simple to understand。 All of these factors will positively contribute to the attainment of the children overall。 There are sections of the book that allow the children to get involved and really engage。 Such as “ready one, ready two, ready thr Personally, I liked this book because Chris utilises many shades of blue to portray the nocturnal wonderings of the bird hunters。 This book would be good to explore with children in reception because of the bright pictures and because the text is short and simple to understand。 All of these factors will positively contribute to the attainment of the children overall。 There are sections of the book that allow the children to get involved and really engage。 Such as “ready one, ready two, ready three, GO!”。 As there is lots of repetition the children will be able to follow and even anticipate the sequence of events that make up the plot。 A book like this can help children to understand key skills such as resilience because the bird hunters kept trying and they weren't discouraged when the situation didn’t go how they wanted it to。 。。。more

I feel like this book would be really engaging for a little child but I found that the use of 'shh' repeatedly throughout the book became a little distracting to the story as a whole。 I feel like this book would be really engaging for a little child but I found that the use of 'shh' repeatedly throughout the book became a little distracting to the story as a whole。 。。。more

The adults have a plan that the little one keeps ruining。 However it turns out that the little one has something better than a plan - kindness。 A cute story that parents and children will both appreciate。

The repetitive nature of this book makes it accessible for younger readers, as they can learn the pattern of the story。 This would be a great book for teaching the 'sh' digraph in phonics。 Personally I did not enjoy the font, I found it quite a difficult one to read, which reduced my engagement with the storyline as I was focused on the font。 The repetitive nature of this book makes it accessible for younger readers, as they can learn the pattern of the story。 This would be a great book for teaching the 'sh' digraph in phonics。 Personally I did not enjoy the font, I found it quite a difficult one to read, which reduced my engagement with the storyline as I was focused on the font。 。。。more

I love the repetition in this book。 It allows children to join in with the story and for them to be able to take control and read the story to you。

I enjoyed the unusual style of this book。 It shows a clever use of a simple blue colour palette throughout which adds a lot to the story。 I feel like it gives the overall message of 'A little kindness goes a long way' with a humorous ending。 Would be great to use for phonics with the 'sh' sound。 I enjoyed the unusual style of this book。 It shows a clever use of a simple blue colour palette throughout which adds a lot to the story。 I feel like it gives the overall message of 'A little kindness goes a long way' with a humorous ending。 Would be great to use for phonics with the 'sh' sound。 。。。more

I enjoyed the illustrations and the use of brightly coloured animals against the blue background to represent the darkness, which are beautiful to look at。 The moral, although unclear with the plot jumpy at times, is that nature should be left alone because their beauty is important to our world。 This is important and useful in linking to lessons on deforestation and poaching but in my opinion there are better books with similar morals and a more fast-paced plot。

Oh, this is such a fun book to read with little ones。 Endless giggles and excitement as we all witnessed three friends try and try again to catch a bird。 The book reminded me of titles by Jon Klassen and Mo Willams。

Brenda

An excellent read aloud or read alone for early readers。 With sparse, repetitive text and splashes of color on monochromatic pages, the smallest member of the group proves that his plan is better。 Recommended for young readers who need to be reminded that speaking up for kinder, gentler choices is worthwhile。

I like it better than we're going on a bear hunt。 But I personally prefer books with no hunting in them :) I like it better than we're going on a bear hunt。 But I personally prefer books with no hunting in them :) 。。。more

This is a fantastic book from Haughton, perfect for at the end of the day with limited text and creative pictures to guide the story。 This is great for children to join in with the repetitive sentences and 'shh, we have a plan' and 'one, two three'。 All the pictures are in the same colour。 This is a fantastic book from Haughton, perfect for at the end of the day with limited text and creative pictures to guide the story。 This is great for children to join in with the repetitive sentences and 'shh, we have a plan' and 'one, two three'。 All the pictures are in the same colour。 。。。more

I really enjoyed the abstract art in blue shades, highlighting the red and orange bird that the gnome-like characters at the center of the story are trying to capture。 The story has a great repetitive quality sure to delight little ones, and is great for the built-in counting to three that happens a few times。 Themes: Counting, Catch-More-Flies-With-Honey, Being QuietAge range: 2-5

A fun read-aloud - a very funny story about friends trying to capture a bird。 Illustrations are gorgeous。

Cool design, great color。 When we read it, Cora always asks for it to be read it *at least* 2x in a row。 :-)

Presley loved this book- the “shhh” and the “GO!” Very silly, very fun book。 Teaches that even when everyone is doing something one way, they may be a new way to try。
